Betelgeuse’s companion star is lastly prepared for its close-up. Astronomers have taken a transparent portrait of an extraordinary star orbiting the famed supergiant.

The pink supergiant marks one shoulder of the constellation Orion, making it one of the crucial recognizable stars within the night time sky. “It’s actually an iconic star,” says astronomer Andrea Dupree of the Harvard-Smithsonian Middle for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Mass.
There have been hints and claims that Betelgeuse has a buddy for greater than a century. Betelgeuse’s brightness varies on a fancy schedule. Variations each few hundred days are attributed to pulsations contained in the star itself. However an extended variation, lasting six years, was extra mysterious.
In 2024, astronomers linked that six-year brightness cycle to a smaller star orbiting Betelgeuse. If actual, that star would attain its farthest level from Betelgeuse as seen from Earth in December 2024. One other group’s try to get the star on movie was inconclusive.
Dupree and her colleagues used the SPHERE instrument on the Very Massive Telescope in Chile to look at Betelgeuse on two days in December 2024. Dupree was visiting her colleague Miguel Montargès, an astronomer on the Paris Observatory, when he completed processing the pictures.
“He ran in and stated, ‘Oh my god, look! Look what I simply discovered!’” she remembers. The companion star already has a proper title: Siwarha, that means “her bracelet,” as a reference to Betelgeuse’s Arabic title that means “hand of the large.”
Assuming the celebrities shaped on the similar time, the companion is 2.6 to three.1 instances the mass of the solar. That’s extra huge than initially anticipated, Dupree says.
