James Webb Telescope updates odds that ‘metropolis killer’ asteroid 2024 YR4 will hit the moon

The moon will formally be spared from an explosive encounter with a “city-killer” asteroid in 2032, new observations from the James Webb House Telescope (JWST) reveal.

Collected on Feb. 18 and Feb. 26 with JWST’s delicate infrared devices, the brand new observations of the near-Earth asteroid 2024 YR4 allowed NASA astronomers to refine earlier estimates of the area rock’s trajectory — dropping the possibilities of a lunar affect from 4.3% to zero.
